What causes arthritis?

There are numerous factors that can cause arthritis. These includes injury, abnormal metabolism, genetic makeup, infections, an overactive immune system or simply ageing.

Arthritis pain management

Arthritis pain can be managed using a combination of medications, physical therapies and patient education and support.

Non-drug remedies include education and self management; physical therapy including appropriate exercise; muscle strengthening exercises that improve motion and increase mobility; walking aids such as cranes and crutches; footwear and insoles that can improve walking; knee braces that reduce the risk of falling and increase stability of the knee; and heat and cold packs that ease pain.

Medical treatments include analgesics, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid injections, and surgery.

What to do for joint pain

There are topical pain relievers available on the market that help reduce joint pain. Staying physically active and following a proper fitness program can also assist in joint pain management.
