What causes lactose intolerance?

There is an enzyme in our small intestine called lactase. If this enzyme is deficient, the body struggles to break down lactose, the sugar present in milk and dairy products.  Being lactose intolerant doesn't necessarily mean you need to give up dairy, as there are products available that can  provide a source of lactase for the body, and therefore help in the breakdown and digestion of lactose.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance

Symptoms of lactose intolerance usually kick in around 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating foods with lactose content. These symptoms can include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, cramps in the abdominal area, gas, and bloating.

Getting tested for lactose intolerance

Since lactose intolerance can affect your calcium intake, it is best to get yourself tested if you suspect you have it. Consult your doctor if you are frequently experiencing the above symptoms after consuming milk or dairy. Page updated 5/09/2019 3:05:58 pm
