Routine for good lip and mouth care

  • Brush your teeth two times a day using a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride.
  • If you use  dentures, remove them at night. Clean with brush and soak in denture solution overnight.Rinse before using again.
  • Rinse your mouth every one to two hours to avoid oral health problems.

Types of mouthwash

The most commonly used mouthwashes are water and saline because they are safe to use. Chlorhexidine mouthwash is recommended when there's a risk of mouth infection. There are mouthwashes that contains ascorbic acid solution, hydrogen peroxide and sodium bicarbonate. Ask for your doctor's advice before using these types. Mouthwashes with glycerine or lemon increase the dry mouth sensation.

Common mouth problems

Dry mouth can be prevented by frequently drinking water and chewing sugar free gum. There are also artificial saliva products and medicines that can stimulate the salivary glands, which can also help.

Oral thrush is caused by overgrowth of the yeast germ. This can be characterised by white spots in the mouth which may become red or sore. Drops, lozenges, or gels with anti-thrush ingredients such as nystatin, amphotericin or miconazole can help prevent thrush.

Mouth ulcers are painful and recurring, and the most common type of mouth problem. The only way to deal with them is to reduce the pain which can be achieved by using mouthwashes and steroid lozenges.

Bad breath is caused by the buildup of bacteria in the mouth. Rinsing your mouth, flossing, and brushing your teeth regularly can help reduce the problem. Bad breath can also be caused by bad oral hygiene in general.
