Period pain relief

There are a number of painkillers that can be bought over the counter and most of them result in successful pain management. For over the counter medications it is recommended to start taking the day before your period is expected to start.

Natural period pain remedies

Try applying a heat pad around the painful area, normally on your lower abdomen just below your belly button. You can also slightly massage the painful area. Drinking warm beverages may also help lessen the pain. Certain positions may help, such as raising your legs while you lie down or bending your knees while you lie on your side.

What causes period pain?

Generally period pain happens because the muscular wall of the womb contracts and presses the blood vessels around it. This cuts off the oxygen supply to the womb which causes the pain. There are factors that may increase period pain, such as emotional stress, lack of exercise and poor diet. In some cases, period pain can be caused by an existing medical condition, for example endometriosis, so if your period pain is severe or concerning, it is always best to consult your doctor.
