Choosing the right fake tan

When you are choosing a fake tan you need to make sure that the colour it is not too dark for your base skin tone.

If you are naturally pale you are better to put on two coats of a light to medium shade tan which will have a complimentary colour pigment.  If you choose a fake tan that is too dark for your natural complexion it gives you a muddy look rather than looking like a bronzed goddess.

If you have naturally olive skin then go for the dark shades which have a richer colour pigment and will compliment and enrich your natural complexion.

Fake tanning tips

Always exfoliate before applying your fake tan.  It's a good idea to exfoliate and moisturise the day before so skin is smooth and nourished and ready for fake tan application.

Use a fake tanning mitt to avoid getting orange hands, wrists, fingers and nails.

Before you apply your fake tan be sure to put extra moisturiser on your elbows and knees to avoid patchiness in dry areas.

Once you have finished fake tan application take a cotton bud and dab any areas of hyperpigmentation such as pimples or cuts to avoid dark spots.

How to choose self tanning products for men

Sprays, liquids and mousses are generally recommended for men because they are lighter and they don't stick to body hair. It is also best to choose a product that allows you to spray at any angle for a more even tan.

What are some self tanning products for sensitive skin?

Sometimes sensitive skin can get in the way of having a good tan. If you use the wrong product it might result in your skin becoming red or itchy.  So it pays to do your research.  Eco Tan and Bondi Sands have a great reputation for girls with skin allergies. It is always a good idea to do a patch test before you apply it to your whole body. If you have eczema I wouldn't recommend putting fake tan over the top or it will cause hyper pigmentation which will just draw attention to it.  Instead make sure your skin has no dry patches or moisturise dry patches and dab with a cotton bud to avoid hyper pigmentation.

Spray Tans

These are great if you want to go hands free and get a light even tan. It is a great idea to choose a tinted tan so you can see where you are going and make sure you do not miss any spots.

Instant Tanning spray

Instant tanning sprays are great when you are pressed for time and don't have several hours to wait for the tan to develop.  The best thing is, most of them are water resistant so won't sweat off.  They are designed to soap off in the shower.
