Dandruff? Ewwww! This is totally embarrassing. It is not a disease, okay but who wants to be seen with white snowy flakes scattered all over her or his shirt.  It is probably on the same magnitude as any fungal infection because believe it or not, it is actually caused by fungus!

Dandruff as Fungus

As this is debate among many. So to clear this issue up I wanted to write a quick blog post about this topic, dandruff itself is not a fungus. It is however caused by the naturally occurring fungus. And this happens when the fungus breaks down the oils on the scalp also known as sebum. Sadly, some people produce more of this kind f fungus that causes the imbalance leading to the formation of white flakes.

So what is this white scale?

It commonly refers to white skin flakes that shed off from the scalp of some individuals.  It can also appear in other parts of the body that has hair, like the brows, chest or arms. The good news is there is no reason to shun away from people with scurf because unlike fungal infection, it is not contagious. The technical term for this condition is Seborrheic dermatitis.

What causes dandruff?

There are quite a number of studies that showed the various conditions and triggers of dandruff.  Some of those that are common are:

Hurriedly rinsing off shampoo or conditioner, thereby not being able to properly clean the hair and scalp.

  • Yeast infections
  • Fungus called
  • Pityrosporum ovale.
  • Food allergies
  • Consuming sugary foods and those that have yeast. It can also be caused by drinking alcohol.
