Do you ever think about how your day to day activities could be impacting the long-term health of your eyes?  Even though most of us use our eyes all day every day, eye care is something that we often overlook.

Here are three top tips for eye care:

Have your eyes checked by a professional?

We might think our vision is normal, but a comprehensive dilated eye exam could reveal a different story.  This test will let you know if you have any of the common eye diseases.  Knowing your family’s eye history will also help you determine if you are at higher risk of developing an eye condition. It is recommended that even young children get their eyes checked regularly.

Eat the right food.

You’ve probably been told a number of times that carrots are good for the eyes. This is indeed true but green leafy vegetables are also important for keeping eyes healthy.  Foods that contain nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E also have properties that will help prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.

Give your eyes the rest and protection they need.

The recommended rule is to shift your gaze every 20 minutes from whatever you are looking at to a distance of about 20 feet (about 6 meters) in front of you and do this for 20 seconds.   If you use the computer often, you could consider investing in specially developed computer eyewear, to help prevent digital eye strain and fatigue.  

Too much UV exposure can result in cataracts and macular degeneration, therefore wearing sunglasses is important. And, if you are wearing contact lenses, make sure to thoroughly clean them before insertion.
